Majjistral Country Park

This country park stretching from Golden Sands to within sight of Anchor Bay provides some of the most spectacular coastal scenery in Malta.

Mellieha to Golden Bay via Anchor Bay. We started out from Belle View, outskirts of Mellieha, heading along a side street until we came to a disused farm above a valley. Here, we turned right and then left until we came out by Mellieha School and then an old people's home. Eventually we came out at the top of a path that led down through farmer's fields. Before us was a magnificent view across Mellieha Bay and towering above us to our left were cliffs and caves. We took a right fork onto a narrower path which eventually brought us out on the Mellieha bypass. We turned left and then right into the road leading to Popeye Village. Here, we followed a clifftop path to the left that brought us out at a path to the right, cut deeply into the cliffs, that led to the jetty at Anchor Bay. Here, we enjoyed a refreshing swim before retracing our steps. Back at the clifftop, we turned right onto a rough, narrow road that climbed until it joined the Majjistral Country Park with its excellent views as far as Ta 'Cenc cliffs, Gozo. We took the path to the right of the Gahjn Znuber Tower, currently under restoration, and then followed several rough paths, always keeping the cliffs to our right We stopped to photograph the views and even a chameleon that slowly crossed our path. Eventually we came out behing the Golden Sands Hotel, descending to follow the path trough what was formerly a British Army barracks. We turned right and right again to the bus stop at Golden Bay.
Total time: 3 1/2 hours, including swimming.
