VallettaFollowing the Great Siege of 1565, Grand Master Jean De Vallette decided to build a fortified city on the rocky promontory of Mount Sciberas. The first stone of his magnificent city was laid in 1566, a grid pattern of streets laid out, and, within a few short years, the city of Valletta, named in his honour, could boast impregnable walls, fort and bastions, palaces, auberges, cathedral and churches, gardens and harbours.
