As well as being a key centre for tourism, Sliema has developed into a prime area for shopping and nightlife and has many cafes, restaurants and hotels. Sliema's harbour front offers superb views across to Valletta and is the main setting off point for harbour cruises around Marsamxett Harbour and the Grand Harbour, It is also the starting point for Malta's open top bus tours, red buses for the south, blue for the north.
Fort Tigne was built by the Knights of St. John to protect the entrance to the harbour and was further developed by the British. Tigne Point is also known as Dragut Point after the commander of the Turkish troops who used it as a vantage point from which to bombard Fort St. Elmo during the great siege of 1565. Nowadays, Tigne Point houses Malta's premier shopping mall as well as restaurants, leisure facilities, luxury apartments and offices.
