North Malta Coastline

The north of Malta, as well as containing some of the best of the Maltese countryside, has many of the best sandy beaches, including the largest, Mellieha (Ghadira) Bay. Also, Popeye Village, once the Popeye film set, offers a great family day out.

Beaches

Mellieha (Ghadira) Bay

Malta's largest sandy beach with its shallow sea is very popular and offers all sorts of water sports. There are several beach cafes.

Selmun

Mellieha (It-Tunnara), Mgiebah and Selmun are three designated swimming areas on the Selmun peninsula. All are well away from the main beaches and the last two require good walking shoes. They're worth the effort though, especially the sandy Mgiebah Bay. Don't expect any beach facilities - most visitors arrive by boat.

Bus: 41, 221, 222, X1 to Bell View. For It-Tunnara, walk round the coast to the right of Mellieha Bay.

Popeye Village

This group of ramshackle wooden buildings, located at Anchor Bay not far from Mellieha, was built as a film set for the 1980 Popeye film. Now it's open to the public as an open-air family entertainment complex.

There are shows, rides, a small cinema, houses with props and items used in filming, mini golf, puppets and games room. Meet characters from the show including Popeye, Olive Oyl, Bluto and Wimpy. Entrance includes a 15 minute boat trip around Anchor Bay.

During summer, there's a water trampoline area, splas pool and a paddling pool and play area for little ones. There's also a small adjoining fairground.

Buses: 41, 221, 222, X1 to Mellieha Bay, then a longish walk; car from Mellieha bypass. However, all resorts offer organised trips to the village, usually with a discounted entry price.
