The Maltese islands are not renowned for long sandy beaches - the islands are too small and much of the coastline is rugged - and what sandy beaches there are can get crowded during the summer months. However, there are many small bays and beaches - and many coastal areas of oustanding beauty.
The most popular beaches in Malta are Mellieha Bay, Golden Bay and Armier Bay.
Gozo's most popular sandy beaches are in the north, principally Ramla Bay. However, there are plenty of wonderful places to swim, far from the crowds.
Comino is rightly famous for its astonishingly beautiful Blue Lagoon - but it can get very crowded with day trippers in the summer months. However, the sandy beach of Santa Marija Bay is just a short walk away.
